Voice Lessons can be a sizable investment. However, it’s money well spent because vocal technique can rarely be grasped without individualized guidance. You see, everyone has different habits due to years upon years of experience using their voice. These years of speaking and singing establish those habits… habits that are unique to your voice alone. Simply put, Singing Lessons aren’t at all like piano where everyone starts with middle C and goes from there.
Bad vocal habits lead to tension, and tension prevents a singer from creating a clear and relaxed tone. Most tension lies in the tongue or throat, but people rarely even know it’s there until it’s pointed out to them. Long story short, to find out if you’re singing freely or not, compare the feel of your singing voice to your speaking voice. If singing is more difficult than speaking, then you’re getting in your own way.
That being said, a good voice teacher should always help make singing easier without sacrificing vocal quality. So how can one find a good coach? I suggest taking a lesson with a couple of teachers in your area and continue with the one who helps you the most. Just remember that one of your main goals as a new student is replacing old, bad habits with new ones, and that takes time so be patient.
